How the math works

  1. Area = sheets × sheet size (4x8 = 32 sq ft, 4x10 = 40, 4x12 = 48)
  2. Compound (gal) = area × 0.0094 (9.4 gal per 1,000 sq ft) × (1 + waste)
  3. Pails = gallons ÷ 4.5, rounded up
  4. Tape (ft) = area × 0.37 (≈ 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft) × (1 + waste)

Joint tape is sold by length (250 ft and 500 ft rolls), not by weight. Lightweight compounds cover similar area per gallon but weigh about 25–35% less.

Trade pro tips

  • Bed tape with all-purpose or a setting-type (hot) mud; use lightweight topping for the final coats — it sands easier.
  • Level-5 finishes (skim coat over the whole surface) can double the compound needed.
  • Mesh tape needs setting-type compound for the first coat; paper tape works with any.
  • Keep pails sealed with a skim of water on top between days so the mud doesn’t crust.

Frequently asked questions

How much joint compound do I need per sheet of drywall?

About 0.30 gallons per 4x8 sheet (32 sq ft) for three coats — roughly one 4.5-gallon pail for every 15 sheets.

How much drywall mud for 1,000 square feet?

About 9.4 gallons of ready-mixed all-purpose compound — 3 pails of 4.5 gallons — plus around 370 ft of paper tape.

How much drywall tape do I need?

Plan on roughly 370 ft of tape per 1,000 sq ft of board, or about 12 ft per 4x8 sheet. A 500 ft roll covers about 1,350 sq ft.

How many pounds does a bucket of joint compound weigh?

A 4.5-gallon pail of standard all-purpose ready-mix weighs about 61–62 lbs; lightweight versions are closer to 40–45 lbs.
