Tape Measure Calculator

Turn decimal feet or inches from plans, laser measures and spreadsheets into a real tape reading —4.35 ft = 4' 4-3/16". Then add or subtract feet-inch-fractions for cut lists without a pencil.

How the math works

  1. Get total inches — decimal feet × 12. Example: 4.35 × 12 = 52.2"
  2. Pull out whole feet — 52.2 ÷ 12 = 4 ft, remainder 4.2"
  3. Pull out whole inches — 4.2" → 4" and 0.2" left over
  4. Convert the leftover to sixteenths — 0.2 × 16 = 3.2 → round to 3/16"
  5. Reduce the fraction — 3/16 can't be reduced, so the reading is 4' 4-3/16"(mark is 0.0125" short)

For adding and subtracting, the calculator converts every measurement to whole 32nds of an inch, does integer math (no rounding drift), then converts back. That's the same trick carpenters use on paper: get a common denominator first.

Trade pro tips

  • Burn an inch: when the hook is bent or loose, measure from the 1" mark and subtract 1" — then double-check.
  • Framing reads to 1/16". Finish carpentry and cabinet work often go to 1/32".
  • Mark with a "crow's foot" (V) so the point lands exactly on the line, not a fat pencil stroke.
  • Cut on the waste side of the line — your blade kerf is about 1/8".
  • Red 16" marks = stud layout. Black diamonds (every 19.2") are for 5-joist-per-8-ft I-joist layout.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 4.35 feet to feet and inches?

Multiply the decimal part by 12: 0.35 × 12 = 4.2". Then multiply the leftover 0.2" by 16 = 3.2 → 3/16". So 4.35 ft ≈ 4' 4-3/16" on a tape (to the nearest 1/16").

How do I convert decimal inches to a fraction?

Multiply the decimal by your tape precision (16 for 1/16") and round: 0.2" × 16 = 3.2 → 3/16". Reduce if possible — 8/16 becomes 1/2, 4/16 becomes 1/4.

What is 0.1 feet in inches?

0.1 ft = 1.2" which reads as 1-3/16" on a tape to the nearest 1/16". Surveyors and engineers often write decimal feet, carpenters need inches and fractions.

How do you add feet and inches with fractions?

Convert both to inches in the same fraction unit (e.g., 32nds), add, then convert back: 5' 3-1/2" + 2' 7-3/4" = 63.5" + 31.75" = 95.25" = 7' 11-1/4".

Why are some numbers on my tape measure red?

Most US tapes highlight every 16" in red (16, 32, 48…) for standard 16" on-center stud spacing, and mark each foot (12", 24"…) with a red block or "1F, 2F" label.
